I realized that my web page seems a bit negative and argumentive. I am a fun loving guy who generally takes things easy. I grew up in Natick Massachusetts and that is where I lived until it was time for college. I moved out to Indiana to attend Purdue and I now live in Lafayette Indiana. I may live out here in the middle of a corn/soybean field now but I am a New Englander. I am not a huge sports fan but I do enjoy watching the Red Sox especially when they are beating the Yankees. I watch a LOT of TV. I enjoy sci-fi, sitcoms and wrestling. I don't care for "reality" TV which is just seems to be a game show that isn't filmed in under a half hour and has more physical challenges. I enjoy collecting comic books as well as Star Wars legos. I like to play video games and have since the Atari 2600 came out in the late '70s. I defy that TV and violent video games create violent people. I further posit that video games can act as a catharsis. Now this may not be true for everyone but if you look at the numbers of video game players and the amounts of violent crimes commited there is no correlation. Violence existed a long time before the advant of media. Now on with some old rantings.
This country was founded by the people for the people. The people of
this country come from all sorts of backgrounds yet a small group of
people have more favortism given to them than any other faction of
society. These people are slowing the forward progress of our society
and health. Take the government's stand on sex ed. Today's sex ed is
"don't have sex till your married" which does nothing to help prevent
the spread of STDs of those who are still having sex. Condom usage can
help slow the spread of AIDS but our government backed sex ed will not
endorse this. Have the politicians forgoten that horny teens are horny
teens and telling kids not to have sex will lead to kids having unsafe
sex? I'm sure more than a handful of these politicians have had sex
outside of marriage so hypocrisy reigns.
I would like to change the Theory of Evolution into a law. Many aspects
of Evolution have been proven. In some small minded areas of
the US they find this upsetting and have manufactured stickers to the
contrary that have been placed in scientific text books. No where in the
bible is the theory denounced. Just like the earth was not created in a
human day animal life came about and changed. Evolution shows a
connection of change from one generation to another. We know that if
you take 2 forms of life their offspring will inheirit traits from its
parents. Manmade breeding of variations of corn show what this can
bring about from sweet corn to feed corn. Corn was a directed form of
evolution. It did not start in the forms it now assumes it used to be
more like a wheat grain. Nature overtime could have produced a similar
effect. Dandylions prove Darwinism. Look at your lawn. Notice how some
dandylions grow tall and fast while some others keep close to the
ground. The tall fast growing weeds are that way to avoid extinction
from manmade causes (mowing) by growing fast and reproducing quickly.
The low short dandylions hug the ground to avoid lanwmower blades to
polinate later. My Law of Evolution would be: Evolution is the combined
effect of mutations over generations where at a point the total sum of
changes have created a new species.
I live in America. Unfortunately as time goes on America seems to
slowly being eroded into Amerika. The best I can do is rant.
The Assault weapons ban has expired. Now some say this is bad others
good. I think its good. The ban was fluff. 1st the weapons considered
assault weapons would still be available if the gun was made prior to
the ban. 2nd Some guns would qualify for the ban if you added a bayonet
or other "cosmetic" changes. How is putting a knife on a gun so much
more dangerous. 3rd Criminals would still get their guns through the
black market thus the only people who couldn't get these guns are law
abiding citizens who just like to hunt or target shoot. 4th in some
cases the guns were just renamed and thus became fine to own. Also Uzis
and AK-47s are still not legal to import through a prior 1989 law. We
don't need poorly written laws only laws that are enforcable and aren't
just bandaids if there is a problem.
Why does the American government feel it is necessary to limit our freedom? What a person does is their own business. If someone wants to take drugs let them. If they behave irresponsibly that is when they should be punished by the law. If a gay couple wants to get married that is up to them and their religous affiliation its up to the government to grant these couples with the same rights as everyone else. Why does President Bush think that the country should act as he feels we should? He says "After more than two centuries of American jurisprudence and millennia of human experience, a few judges and local authorities are presuming to change the most fundamental institution of civilization,". The fundamental institution is to create families. There are numerous gay couples who are creating families by getting married and adopting. Meanwhile straight families are getting divorces. It is the small minded right that is stiffling progress in this country. To treat ANY individual as different is just wrong. We are all Americans and we should ALL have the same freedoms. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. That is what we were founded on. To limit other peoples happiness is all our government seems to want to do (unless of course your in their "buddy" system).
The FCC - The FCC recently as result of "wardrobe malfunction" has started cracking down on many different things due to some small amounts of complaints. For every voiced complaint there are the unvoiced complaints but there are a vast more voices with no complaint. The conservative right is destroying our rights.
Drugs - Drugs are medicinal, drugs are recreational. I say we need to end the War On Drugs because it is just a war on our freedom of personal choice. It is also a huge waste of our tax dollars. They say that to legalize drugs would send the wrong message to kids. They say that the benefits of certain drugs have to be overlooked due to the possibility of abuse and that recreational drugs are bad. What about Viagra, Cialis and Levitra? If having sex isn't recreational I don't know what is (not to mention the heart problems that could occur while these drugs are put to use.) I say that to put people in jail for smoking something that relieves the symptons of horrible terminal illnesses is the wrong message to send to kids. Compassion is not evil. Kids are not what the Drug War is about but they are being used as pawns. The WOD is about a group of people believing all should be as they are and you shouldn't be allowed the freedom of choice. They are right that kids should not be doing drugs. If you do want kids not doing drugs it is up to parents and teachers to convey what harm COULD come of drug use. Don't lie like Harry Anslinger and the Pot Prohibitionists and make up stories of pot destroying the mind and making fiends of all society. If drugs were legalized and regulated most of the the black market would disappear and kids would not have any more unrestricted access to them. Ask yourself "Why do people turn to drugs like Meth and activities like huffing?" The answer is they want an temporay escape from the world around them and they can't get less harmful means of doing so. If pot were legalized they wouldn't have to resort to Meth or huffing. The WOD has been a collosal failure. It has made people develop all sorts of ways to harm themselves. Extacy might not even have been developed if not for the WOD. People are killed over drugs. People in foreign countries are being killed by our own government for trying to make a living. Stop wasting my tax dollars on this War. If you want to use my money let all those in jail on non-violent drug charges out and send them to some therapy to find out why they want to use drugs. If they decide to keep using drugs that is their perogative. To keep people in prison for smoking pot but allowing convicted killers out early is a farce.
If you want to know more of the history of the WOD's focus on Marijuana see www.adrugwarcarol.com.
One of the victims of the WOD is hemp. Hemp may be related to Marijuana but it is so very different. Marijuana has large amount of THC which gives its user their "high". Hemp has practically no THC and cannot create a "high". Hemp can be used for a LOT of different applications from food to paper (in fact the Constitution and Bill of Rights were drafted on paper made of hemp.) If not for its geneology we would see it everywhere but our farmers are denied this rotational crop for no good reason.
News - "A unanimous three judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit in San Francisco said the Drug Enforcement Administration cannot regulate hemp in food because such "non-psychoactive hemp products" are not included in its list of dangerous drugs. " - Caroline E. Mayer, Washington Post Staff Writer
Another stupid part of the War On (some) Drugs are Operation Pipedreams and Operation Pipecleaner. The focus of these 2 operations is the elimination of delivery methods for marijuana. Tommy Chong ran a business of selling water pipes (aka bongs) and other "paraphenalia". His stores wer raided and inventory seized. This happened to a few other businesses but only Mr. Chong has recieved jail time. So now that people can't go to their favorite head shop to by a bong they must either a) make their own or b) go to a store and buy some roling papers as they are meant for roling cigarettes (which can lead to an early death). What is wrong with our government? Why do they keep taking away our toys? Isn't the goal of our country "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness"? There are a lot of people now unhappy and in jail for trying to be happy with their lives. Too bad they didn't turn to the bottle and die of alcohol poisoning instead.
The war in Iraq was wrong. The ends do not justify the means.
Saddam Hussein had no Weapons of Mass Destruction ( he may have thought
so but his scientists were lying to him ). He was a ruthless dictator
and it is good that he is no longer in charge. It was not our place
though to take him out. Too many of our good troops have died for
George Bush's personal agenda. Unfortunately we are now there and
hopefully the new government will be accepted and allow us to pull out
troops if not all the way at least to South Korean levels. Now our
troops are over in a country that no longer wants us there. They did
appreciate our removal of Saddam but we have only brought them
more death. We have not made their country more secure, in fact there
are now more terrorists in Iraq.
The war in Afganistan was justified. We were attacked by terrorists
backed by the ruling Taliban. Its interesting though that since our
invasion the illegal opium trade in Afganistan has skyrocketed.
If our own country is having problems why are we going
elsewhere. Before we try to "fix" the world we should take care of our
problems here. Oh and gays getting "married" is not a problem. It has
no negative consequences and only positive ones for the people
involved. If you don't like how someone lives their life fuck off, its
their life. And if you are religous then shouldn't your God be the one
who is the judge? Don't forget you shouldn't use the Lords name in vain
and if you cite the Lord for your own ends what do you think your doing?
